Serenade Part 9

Anita walked into the living room and sat. The boys played on the carpet where both parents could see them.

“ ‘Nita, something’s wrong. You haven’t been the same since the boys were born. Tell me what the matter is.” He searched her eyes.

She started crying. “Oh, Lennie. I’m so tired all of a sudden, and I know I have to tend to the kids. I need a break! The boys are a month old. I wish we had a babysitter so you and I could spend some time alone!”

“Sweetheart, the last time we spent time alone, we PRODUCED these guys! You said you didn’t want any more kids, so I thought...”

“Boy, that’s what you get for thinking, Lennie! I never wanted you to stop loving me, just...well...slam on the brakes, maybe? You know what I mean.”

Lennie grinned mischievously. “Maybe we can pawn the kids off onto their godfather and godmother for a few hours...”

Anita grimaced. “Not a good idea. I know Katie’s not been feeling well. The last thing she needs is to deal with is a couple of rowdy boys! I wish...”

He looked into her eyes. “What do you wish, dear?”

Anita glanced down, at the boys, sniffed and then said quietly, “I wish my mom could see the boys. They’re her only grandchildren. But, I know, I know...the LAST people we want handling the boys are Mobsters.”

Lennie took her hand. “Are you having regrets about testifying in Mastroanni’s trial? I know the defense was quite harsh with you.”

Anita snorted. “Harsh? Is that what you call it? Hell, Lennie, I wasn’t even a “made man” in the Mafia and they STILL treated me like a traitor. It wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a million-dollar contract on me right now. No, I’m not having any regrets. I’m glad that son of a bitch is in jail for the rest of his miserable sorry life. But it still doesn’t bring my Dad back so he can love his grandsons.” She looked at him, saw the pain there. “Honey...I’m sorry. I guess I’m really more upset with that jerk than I led on to be. I don’t know.”

She got up. “Dinner will be on the table in a few minutes. Then, if it’s all right with you, I want to lay down. I’m really not feeling very good.”

Lennie started to get really worried about his beautiful ‘Nita. I better call Mikey and see if he can help me with these kids, he thought. I need to ask him about this letter and about ‘Nita’s behavior. I need some advice, and he’s been around enough to give it to me.
